It's Sierra Saturday! Let's Play Police Quest: Open Season, the Police Quest IV that did happen, created after the departure of Jim Walls from Sierra On-Line, and his replacement as Police consultant by infamous LAPD Police Chief Daryl F. Gates. Follow along with the NPCs as we take to the mean streets of Los Angeles in the shoes of whitebread cardboard cutout police detective John Carey.

Content Warning: Police Quest: Open Season includes realistic depictions of violence, adult themes, and culturally insensitive portrayals of racial stereotypes.

In this episode:
Alright, this is the last of it - the whole insane Police Quest Series, wrapped up right here - at least before it became more of a tactical strategy game under new management. We join Carey for his last outing into fictional policing where he gives up completely on police work, and instead allows a dog to lead him to his culprit: The connection we're meant to make? The dog must've liked Luella Parker, because it was protecting her corpse.

Mitchell was one of her clients, so that means the dog is probably Mitchell's dog, so when you lasso (yes, you heard me) Mitchell's dog, it leads you right to his "lair", which is also attached to the movie theatre. Why they couldn't have made it a little less bonkers and given you reason to investigate the theatre without having a dog lead you there is anyone's guess.

The side-plot about Ragtop Spiff, Bobby Johnson, "Rude Boys Get Bail", Yo Money... All pointless. Rene Garcia was just a stepping stone that led nowhere. The game wastes so much of your time. Regardless, congratulate yourself. You made it this far.

Police Quest: Open Season is the 4th and final adventure game in the Police Quest Series, and perhaps the least well-regarded among the formerly Jim Walls-helmed franchise, in this installment led by controversial LAPD former chief of police, Daryl F. Gates. It shifts the scene of the series away from the Sonny Bonds story and the city of Lytton to a more gritty (and racially insensitive) depiction of Los Angeles, as envisioned by Gates - putting the player in the shoes of veteran homicide detective John Carey, investigating the brutal murder of his former partner.

Open Season is similar to the rest of the games in the Police Quest series in that it focuses heavily on police procedure to advance the player toward victory, but leans much more heavily on "realism" to tell its story, and doubles down on the required thoroughness and in-office police paperwork. It also places a large focus on the "drug problem" in Los Angeles - unsurprising as its creator was known for spearheading the "War on Drugs" in the United States, as well as creation of anti-drug initiatives like D.A.R.E.

The NPCs are playing the GOG version of Police Quest: Open Season, with Roland MT-32 audio.

Sierra Saturday is a weekly series on the Level 0 NPCs channel, where Matt & Luke relive their childhoods playing classic adventure games of the '80s and '90s (and beyond?). Sierra adventure games were a special breed of dark humor, brutally unfair puzzles and unforgettable characters, and we hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane with us.
