I am a huge fan of classic horror games like Resident Evil, and SIGNALIS certainly didn't disappoint! This game excels in everything it was trying to do - even in using the outdated control mechanics of Resident Evil 1.

I find the pixelated art style to be pleasing while adding to the themes about technology, and AI. The sound design is solid and does a good job maintaining the tension and atmosphere. The environmental design is wonderful but like most classic horror games you really need to suspend your disbelief as the story progresses. Luckily being science fiction and taking place mostly on a planetary outpost helps explain the sudden tile set changes.

The controls are better than the original Resident Evil, and Song of Horror which adopted the "tank" feeling from its inspiration. While the controls add some moments of horror knowing that you cannot make Elster react quickly, focusing on making the controls work for you does take away from one's ability to observe and appreciate the environment. In my opinion, such reminders to the player that the entire experience is a game hurts the tension it is trying to build.

I highly recommend SIGNALIS. it is now one of my favourite games released in 2022.
