Bryan Fuller has always blurred the line between horror and fairy tale, from Pushing Daisies to Hannibal. With his feature debut, Dust Bunny, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, he finally brings that sensibility to the big screen with a star-powered cast.
Starring Sophie Sloan in her feature debut and leading role as Aurora, as well as Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver, the film transforms the childhood terror of a monster under the bed into a darkly whimsical narrative about grief, imagination, and unlikely companionship. In Collider’s Media Studio at the Cinema Center during TIFF, Fuller and Weaver sat down with Steve Weintraub to discuss the film, where Fuller described the story in a way that is sure to bring audiences to theaters this winter, saying, "It's a fairy tale to inspire traumatized children and to speak to adults with traumatized children deep inside their hearts."
Watch the full video above where the pair talk about the film’s origins, the challenges of world-building on a tight budget, and why Weaver sees it as an “instant classic.” Fuller also reveals how the film nearly began as an Amazing Stories concept, and why he felt compelled to make it his feature debut, while Weaver shares her thoughts on Noah Hawley's Alien: Earth series, teases The Mandalorian & Grogu, and talks about continuing her work with James Cameron with the Avatar franchise, revealing she's read the scripts for the fourth and fifth films, and fans are going to love what she has to say.
