This is the story of Jacob Reeves, a man who has lost his reason to live. What has happened cannot be changed, and thus, in order to escape from it all, he chooses to throw himself into the depths to end his misery. However, rather than disappearing forever, he instead awakens in a strange place, the memories of his former life gone. Now lost and confused, he has no choice but to venture forth into the unknown - not yet aware of the fact that his supposed way out plunged him straight into a far worse nightmare.

"Silence of the Sleep", released on the 1st of October 2014, is a psychological 2D horror adventure game developed and published by Finnish fellow Jesse Makkonen - indeed, just one person, which felt impressive then and still does now. I say that because I first discovered it back in 2016 and proceeded to Let's Play most of it, but due to some technical difficulties towards the end, the project ultimately needed to be cancelled. However, I did want to return to it at some point, quietly awaiting the opportunity - and now, about nine years later, it has finally come. Honestly, based on the visuals alone, I do believe it is fair to call "Silence of the Sleep" a work of art. Stylistically, I very much admire the choice of (mostly) black silhouettes, how they move about and interact with the world around them, which features unique, digitally drawn graphics that serve to achieve unparalleled atmosphere. Excellent audio design further enriches the experience, and I remember the plot being quite intriguing. Also, there are plenty of characters to encounter, their personalities as fascinating as they are absurd; thus, what is not to enjoy about this composition? Above all, "Silence of the Sleep" has more to offer than just your basic horror experience. Specifically, it knows how to be multifaceted, adding some wonderfully ridiculous humour to the usual spooks, therefore keeping things fresh and full of surprises - ultimately, I have nothing but praises to chant and cannot wait to plunge myself into the blackness once more - but is it truly meant to last forever? Well, only one way to find out, no?
