Silent Hill 2 is art ...an essay
8There is no game I can think of that I consider to be art more than Silent Hill 2 for the playstation 2. I really love the silent hill series and silent hill 2 is one is the really standout title in the series. I mean the the team silent silent hill games are all stand out in the series. There's really some reason for each one to be noteworthy. They all do something unique and bring something to the genre. Silent hill one is silent hill one which refined survival horror to masterpiece, silent hill 3 is the best looking game on the ps2 bar none, silent hill 4 the room had a unique premise and the first person aspect of the game was ahead of it's time ages before all horror games became first person. Silent hill 2's contribution not only to the series but in my opinion to the gaming world in general is to help elevate video games into art and not just kids toys. Silent hill 2's story is so damn mature and intelligent. It's not something that you would expect from a video game. There were large in depth stories in video games before but none had themes like Silent hill 2. It's so melancholy. It's about a man who is dealing with the emotional fall out of having Euthanized his sick wife. I mean it's not like in resident Evil where you just play a cop fighting a corporation and it's evil machinations. Silent hill 2 is an emotional journey examining the pains of love and loss, amongst other themes. Everything from game design, to enemy design, to the characters and their motivations. The horror aspect and has been enhanced and I have to say that the silent hill atmosphere has been greatly enhanced and when something creepy happens it feels like something is watching you from the hole that isn't there any more to the labyrinth and letters in Brookhaven hospital depicting the people that are committed there. Creepy. This game also teaches the audience a great deal more about Silent Hill's lore. I think Silent hill is a game location ranking up there with the mushroom kingdom and Hyrule. Really I could go on about Silent hill 2 forever. It's really the best game in the whole series.
