It might be the most inspiring breakdown of the creative process by artists I’ve ever heard. When John Waite wrote and recorded the song Missing You in 1984, he did it in a flash of inspiration. He was over at a cowriting partner’s house and listening through a song he had on a tape that they would collaborate on when his friend rewound past the song they were planning to work and John heard a totally different song.
What he heard was Phenomenal and he said hold on, let me hear this. He stood up and sang the 1st verse and full chorus of Missing You straight away, made it all up on the spot from a stream conscious, and they ended up recording it and that moment of spontaneity became a #1 Smash in 1984. and it was something that John was going through in the moment, a contradiction of emotions… You gotta hear this straight from John.
