As you can see, the crawlers on this level can smack you around in a large variety of ways. If all the hits were 'weak' and you'd get knocked forward instead of backward, you'd save a lot of time, but as it's random...

With this route, imprisoning the crawlers is recommended. Otherwise they disperse and probably cause time loss later on.
