After 17 years in Rhode Island cities, I've lived in rural Maine for the past year. In RI, I saw videos of people skipping rocks on frozen lakes and thought, "I'm gonna do that one day." For the past few days, I've been able to achieve that.

On a cold and foggy Maine day, I biked to the pond, which had frozen over, with the intent of taking in the eerie yet cool sight of fog over water. Before leaving, I remembered I could skip rocks on the ice and hear a cool sound. And cool, that sound was.

In the following nights, as the temperature dropped further, the ice began jacking (when ice in the middle freezes and pushes the ice onto land). At first, I didn't know what the sound was, but then I heard the sound all along the shore. Unfortunately, it seems like the ice jacking dampened the sound of the rock skipping.
