Skull and Bones is...not what I expected.

Don't get me wrong, I've still enjoyed my time playing the game. It's just...not an RPG. A lot of developers see any form of character "leveling" as an RPG, which is the weakest form of definition possible. I wanted a AAA version of Risen or Sea Dogs, or even a more actiony version of Sid Meier's Pirates. To some degree, I suppose that last one is the most accurate, but Skull and Bones manages to put more emphasis on a community-based environment, and I'm not big into the idea that I HAVE to be connected to the internet in order to play. I'm forced to play with others, whether I want to or not.

Ultimately, though, it's the lack of ground combat that bugs me most. I don't mind sailing around and fighting other ships - the combat is as fun as it was when it was first unveiled with Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. But being able to run ashore and talk to people is, ultimately, a tease, because I can't do anything else beyond that. I want to be a PIRATE, which means I'm running through jungles and beaches and fighting other pirates and the British, and even mythical monsters (if they want to stretch the fantastic). But Ubisoft just went and built a ship-combat simulator, under the guise of a pirate game, and it's underwhelming while simultaneously meeting the general promises they made.

So, I guess I'm optimistically disappointed? If that's actually a thing.
