Skyrim 100% Maximized Legendary Playthrough - 259. Labyrinthian Exterior and Entrance
4Last time we stopped right at the massive arches that delimit the southern entrance to Labyrinthian, and today it's time to enter and explore. First, however, Serana seems to have gotten lost along the way, so we travel back to Dustman's Cairn - the nearest fast travel spot - to make her show up.
Entering Labyrinthian, there's not just a lot to the exterior. A few Frost Trolls patrol the area, but they don't even begin to pose a threat to us. Besides that there are just a few urns and semi-hidden chests to loot.
Arriving at the entrance to the dungeon proper we witness a ghostly vision of days gone by, when a fresh-faced Savos Aren was apparently part of an expedition of young mages with more ambition than wisdom who decided to delve into the ruins. I'm sorely tempted at this point to put off the dungeon for one of the other locations inside Labyrinthian - Shalidor's Maze or even Lost Valkygg. I feel the need for something to wash the taste of the bad writing of the College questline out of my mouth, but the desire to roleplay proves stronger. Ancano is actively threatening the College, so it wouldn't be fair to our colleagues at the College to leave them in peril while we go off exploring for fun.
So we delve into the first zone of the dungeon. It isn't long, but it does contain one of the best encounters of the game. I'm sure most Skyrim players remember the first time they entered the large room, only to have a skeleton dragon rise from the center and attack them. After all, you know to keep an eye on the skies when outside, but to have a dragon inside a dungeon truly subverts expectations. It's a great moment, even if it is somewhat ruined by the dragon being pitifully weak. I wish they had committed more to this encounter and made the dragon at least as strong as an Ancient Dragon to really up the stakes, but alas.
We continue on to the entrance to the next zone, Labyrinthian Chasm. Real Life was once again limiting how long I could commit to recording during this session, so this proved to be the best spot to cut until next time.
