Previously, for the Thieves Guild quest "Blindsighted", Davilas defeated Mercer Frey and recovered the Skeleton Key and the Eyes of the Falmer. Now, for the quest "Darkness Returns", Karliah wants Davilas to return the Skeleton Key to the Twilight Sepulcher west of Falkreath. While the Skeleton Key is nice to have as an unbreakable lockpick, it has to be returned if you want to finish the Thieves Guild quest line.

After resuming, Davilas fast-travels to Helgen. After ridding Helgen of some bandits that have moved in, Davilas follows the road southwest to Falkreath.

Along the way, he finds a cabin named Pinewatch. There is also an obvious bandit ambush at an overpass. Then, there is the Spriggan-guarded Peak's Shade Tower on a hill just off the road.

Before long, Davilas discovers the town of Falkreath. Just as he arrives, a guard asks him about a certain dog. The guard issues the objective "Speak to Lod". Lod is Falkreath's blacksmith.

Afterwards, Davilas continues on towards the Twilight Sepulcher. Along the way, he discovers the Roadside Ruins. He also does battle with a Blood Dragon.

Eventually, Davilas finds the entrance to the Twilight Sepulcher and goes inside. Again, he must leave his follower behind. Just inside, Davilas chats with a Nightingale Sentinel. This is actually the ghost of Mercer Frey's murder victim, Gallus. Davilas must now follow the Pilgrim's Path to the Ebonmere and return the Skeleton Key to its rightful place.

Nearby to the east, Davilas can find the corpse of Nystrom and find the informative Nystrom's Journal. It holds information about the trials that lie ahead.

Davilas starts down the Pilgrim's Path. At the first trial, there is a hidden chamber.

At the second trial, Davilas finds a dark room with brightly lit areas. Here, Davilas must stay to the dark areas. If he enters the light, he takes damage.

At the third trial, there is a statue of Nocturnal. Davilas can take the offering placed before her if he wishes. Here, he must pull two chains, one to the right, the other to the left. This turns out the lights and opens the way forward.

At the fourth trial, there are multiple traps, including darts and pendulum traps. However, to the left, there is a Master-level door that Davilas can go through instead. It's easy with the Skeleton Key.

The door leads to the Twilight Sepulcher Inner Sanctum. There, he must drop into the waiting pit and examine the corpse of Nystrom's associate, Anders. Anders's Message is quite revealing.

After a brief wait, Davilas arrives at the Ebonmere, where he can return the Skeleton Key. Once this is done, Nocturnal deigns to speak with him.

Then, Davilas talks to Karliah. He may now select one of three Nightingale roles. He can switch powers once per game day. Davilas selects Agent of Shadow, which allows him to be invisible for two minutes while sneaking. This gives him the power "Shadowcloak of Nocturnal". This concludes the quest "Darkness Returns". The player earns the trophy "Darkness Returns" for finishing this quest.

Afterwards, Gallus's ghost appears for a few words with Karliah. After Gallus is gone, Davilas can speak with Karliah a bit more.

Then, Davilas can use the convenient new portal to return to the entrance. He heads back outside and meets up with his follower.

Next time, Davilas will return to Brynjolf at the Thieves Guild. There are still a few tasks to complete before the quest line is finished, but the end is in sight.
