It's been a few months since I actually played this. My reason for going back to it? I've seen a few Japanese streamers play this over the past month and figured I oughta remember the joys of card games. It's still a rougelike with branching paths, so it's not that much different from playing FTL is it? That said, I actually need a break from FTL because I've been noticing that I've been off my game recently. Don't worry, it's only temporary and I'll be back to playing FTL again soon. Like the FTL videos, these will get chapter timestamps. Since this is divided by acts, I shouldn't need to go into detail of what each act is.

That aside, it's time for another essay on a mod character in Slay the Spire. This is the Runesmith, an original character that uses Elements to craft Runes. She specializes in combat in a similar way to the Defect. The biggest difference being that she can hold up to 7 slots of "Runes" (or orbs for Defect players), but unlike the Defect, she does not replace Runes upon reaching the max slots and must Break them using cards that can do so.
Her main draw are the Runes she can create to help her do battle. Runes function similar to orbs from the Defect in that they activate at the end of the turn or gain enhanced effects if "used". Runes must be created by using cards with the "Craft" keyword in order to be utilized for the battle. Craft cards require "Elements". Elements are displayed in two distinct locations: above your Energy which shows how much you currently have, and below a card's cost which shows the cost to actually craft a rune. A card with Craft can still be used if you can play it but don't have enough Elements to do so. In this case, the amount needed is added to your pool.
Occasionally, you'll be able to "consume" the rune with cards that have the "Break" keyword. Cards with the Break keyword will use the oldest Rune you have and activate its effect twice. This is a very important thing as you cannot create new Runes if all slots are taken.
In order to make your Runes more powerful, you need cards that increase your "Potency". Unlike Defect's Focus buff which provides its effects at all times, "Potency" only affects Runes when they are crafted.
Occasionally, you'll see two different keywords: "Enhance" and "Downgrade". Cards with "Enhance" will "upgrade" another card, increasing its effects by 50%. This effect can stack (additively), but will all be consumed upon using the Enhanced card. In order to retain Enhance stacks on a card, they must be affected by "Stasis". Despite its name, Stasis prevents stacks of Enhance from being removed when they are played. For the opposite, cards with Downgrade are typically more powerful than normal, but will Downgrade cards by removing all stacks of Enhance as well removing upgrades, if any. This doesn't affect the card overall and will remain internally upgraded for future battles.

I can't really recommend anything sort of build since this is my first time actually going through this and it's been a while since I last played Slay the Spire. You'll have to play it yourself to find out what you can do with this.

For relics, you start with the "Broken Ruby", which grants two Ignis (red) at the start of battle. The purpose of this starter relic is to allow you use the Craft card you start off with in the early stages of the run. Its boss replacement is the "Core Crystal". While you don't start off with any Elements at the beginning of battles, it'll increase any Element gains by 50% while also doubling its cap. Like typical boss relics, there are also some that provide a benefit and downside.
For relics to find...it's rather hard to recommend relics aside from popular ones like Unceasing Top, Ice Cream, etc., but Bottled Tornado is a great option as one of her cards (Unlimited Power) allows her to ignore the Element cost of crafting. Letter Opener is an unusually good option thanks the low to non-existent cost of her Craft cards.

Overall, this is a really well done character mod; it has a sprite and card arts that easily fit in with the general theme of this game and even has its own end animation.

0:00 - Start
0:35 - Act 1
21:14 - Act 2
44:52 - Act 3
1:17:45 - Final Act
1:27:50 - End
