Slipstream - Classic Arcade Formula Racing Game (Capcom 1995)
A fun and challenging classic 2D formula racing game, Slipstream was developed by Capcom in 1995, and ran on Sega's System 32 arcade hardware.
The game featured 3 modes of play, including a time trial, passing contest, and world championship modes. The championship mode appears to depict 4 historic grand prix tracks, including Germany's Hockenheim, Australia's Adelaide, Monaco's Circuit De Monaco, and Japan's Suzuka Grand Prix.
Players had 8 formula racing cars to choose from, each with their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of speed, handling, etc. While some of the cars felt well balanced, others feel uncontrollable to say the least.
Slipstream had a turbo boost meter that fills up when players trailer or sideline opponents, in which an announcer states "Slip Stream" as the turbo mode is activated. The boost meter appears to be activated by hitting the start button when full, but periodically goes off on its own as well.
Part of the game's challenge was blocking opponents from behind you. When opponents get near you, the screen flashes the message "Enemy" on the screen. Opponents will often ram your car from behind to break the barrier and speed ahead of you.
The game's graphics weren't exactly state of the art, but the bright 2D sprites and scaling were visually appealing; as so was the changing scenery's that felt reminiscent of Sega's classic Out Run series. This title didn't really see the light of day in arcades, and it appears this was rather a prototype racer that Capcom didn't fully publish commercially.
