Here is the first game in the Mario Kart series, it is Super Mario Kart, which released in 1992 and has had 8 games in the series, unless you count Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch as the same game as its Wii U variant, as well as Mario Kart Tour on mobile devices, which did come out at late September.
This game has eight playable characters, Mario, Princess Toadstool, Bowser, Koopa Troopa, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong Jr., and Toad. Since Princess Toadstool was not known as Peach at the time, she was just known as "Princess" in this game. Some characters use special items as CPU players, and each character have different music when you finish a race.
This is Donkey Kong Jr.'s only appearance in a Mario Kart game, because in later games, he is replaced by Donkey Kong, and while Koopa Troopa is playable in later games, he is replaced by Wario in Mario Kart 64.
This game has 20 different tracks, most of which were taken from Super Mario World, and some of these tracks return to future Mario Kart games as Retro Tracks, in Mario Kart DS, Mario Circuit 1, Donut Plains 1, Koopa Beach 2, and Choco Island 2 return, and in Mario Kart Wii, Ghost Valley 2 and Mario Circuit 3 return, and in Mario Kart 7, Mario Circuit 2 and Rainbow Road appear, and in Mario Kart 8, Donut Plains 3 is the only track to return, as SNES Rainbow Road is a DLC track in Mario Kart 8. All of these tracks did appear in Mario Kart: Super Circuit for the Game Boy Advance as Extra Tracks.
