Eclipses of both the sun and moon are rare, yet not uncommon, natural occurrences, and seen today as exciting wonders of nature. But in ancient times, when astronomy was primitive, eclipses signified many things, sometimes as good omens and other times as signs of bad things to come. Many explanations for eclipses were told of in mythology all across the world. Some say that they were an indication of angered gods or spirits, or a fight between two celestial entities, or even a union between two romantic partners in the heavens. But mostly? Many stories claim a giant animal or monster is trying to eat the sun or moon!
