Solomon Joseph Solomon: A Collection of 36 Paintings

As the brush of Solomon danced upon canvas, the guiding hand of his mentor, Alexandre Cabanel, lingered ever-present. Yet, whispers of inspiration also found their way from the souls of Frederic Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema, infusing Solomon's work with their essence. To make a living, Solomon breathed life into portraits, but his true passion lay in the grand tapestries of myth and scripture, where drama and theatrics intertwined in epic narratives.

Among the many masterpieces that bore his signature, Samson (1887) stood as a testament to his skill. The biblical tale of Samson and Delilah came alive in vivid strokes, as the painting celebrated the human form through a chorus of male nudes in motion. This ode to strength and vulnerability found a home in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, where it remains a beacon of Solomon's artistry.

Other enchanting creations that captured the hearts of many include the tragic embrace of Ajax and Cassandra (1886) and the tender awakening of The Birth of Love (1896). Solomon's genius extended beyond these mythic realms, as he gained renown for his captivating portraits of figures both great and small.

When he immortalized Mrs. Patrick Campbell as 'Paula Tanqueray' (1894) in Arthur Wing Pinero's The Second Mrs. Tanqueray, Solomon's fame as a portrait artist soared. He went on to portray the visages of notable souls, such as architect Sir Aston Webb, and even brushed the regal countenances of King George V, Queen Mary, and Prince Edward (later King Edward VIII).

His talents were not confined to the canvas, for Solomon also weaved visual stories as a book illustrator, particularly for tales of adventure. In 1914, he took pen to paper and shared his wisdom with the world in his tome, The Practice of Oil Painting and Drawing, leaving a legacy for those who would follow in his footsteps.
