30when the night closes around you
you're sure that something's there
you can see or smell or touch it
but you feel it in the air
You walk back to your room
all the while looking behind

a darkened street before you
headphones in your ears
in the corner of your eye there's movement
you turn to see more clear
a racoon stares up at you
and you're frightened blind
that's the animal inside you

when you're logic fails you
and your senses grow
the universe impales you
on a tower made of i don't know
you're fast asleep and dreaming
of some long forsaken place
the door to your room is opened
and you come rushing back through time and space
an enemy to be defeated
a lover being soft and kind
that's the animal inside you
that's the animal mind
there's no window and no doorway
in this room and i'm all alone
not a soul to talk to
in my mind a high pitched drone
as i pace and i lose perspective
one human being confined
i am the animal inside me
i am the animal mind
you can't fight what you're made of
evolution's slow
and you will always be afraid of
that tower made of i don't know
