If you watch my 'Visual Sound Test: Sonic 1' video, you can see that there are some stray notes after the end of the credits music. It appears that these were meant to harmonise with notes earlier in the song, but for some reason they're mistimed. Removing three extraneous rests from the music data allows them to play with supposedly-correct timing.
