1Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were released separately in 1994 for the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis. The game uses lock-on technology as well as an auto-save. The lock-on part allows you to play both games as one or Sonic in S&K and Knux in Sonic 3.

Next, the back story. After Sonic and Tails defeated the Death Egg in space, they continue their journey. More trouble arises. Dr. Eggman or Robotnick (which ever you prefer) tricks Knuckles into thinking that Sonic and Tails were stealing the Chaos Emeralds for some evil reason. Thus, the game starts where Sonic and Tails must collect the Emeralds all over again. As for Knuckles, he continues to cause trouble for Team Sonic.
