For some reason when starting the game, the Red Star Rings won't appear until you finish both acts of Green Hill, so you'll have to backtrack to the level to get the Red Star Rings. Every time you collect a Red Star Ring you'll unlock Concept Art & new Skills to experiment with during the main stages. If you collect all 90 Red Star Rings, you'll unlock the Homing Attack Skill for Classic Sonic, and it doesn't feel forced on to make the game level design depend on it like how it was in the 3DS version.
