Gameplay
It's really fun. The physics are spot on with good momentum physics and plenty of speed. The 4 characters each have their own unique abilities and keep things varied while the introduction of up to 4 player local multiplayer is a welcome addition. The levels are large and well designed with plenty of alternative paths to encourage exploration. Level features are designed to tailor to various characters individual skills, thus adding strong replay incentives. You also have collectibles including the prerequisite emeralds, now coupled with bonus powers, and medals which can be exchanged in the games shop for use in the vs battle mode. The bosses are varied and interesting, each with varied attack patterns and strategies to defeat them. The length and size of levels and boss fights is spot on.
The multiplayer can, at times, seem a bit unclear as to which player the camera follows, but at the push of a button you respawn to the player the camera did follow. This ensures that no one player is given priority and fixes the issue from previous games where the second player would control Tails but be very much in a subordinate role. It can be suboptimal in places but its still an improvement.
Graphics
It looks gorgeous. Everything is bright and colourful. Character models are wonderfully detailed and animation is full of character. Backgrounds are littered with interesting little details, like the main characters interacting with animals. The stages themselves have nice aesthetic design and each zone is unique in its own way. The switch version runs fairly low res and some of the texture detail is lower than other versions, but performance is very good and the overall aesthetic is very good. I prefer the omission of blurring effects in the backgrounds, it keeps everything clear and to me that's a better look for Sonic.
Sound
The songs are great and fit the style of the game perfectly. Its very much in line with classic era Sonic, but with modern tech ensuring excellent sound quality. The songs are catchy and high paced, supporting the gameplay and making things even more fun. Sound effects are clear, pleasant to the ear and very much what you would expect from a Sonic game.
Overall
Its excellent with a fun 1 player campaign of reasonable length and plenty of collectibles to find and unlockable items + multiplayer features extending this to a fairly lengthy experience. Great fun on your own, with friends and for the family. Definitely worth a purchase.
