Sonic the Hedgehog 3 intro gameplay: not the worst game in the world, but a disappointing Sonic game

My issues with the game is this:
Is it a Sonic game if you canNOT run in a straight line in the first level?
Knuckles is a cool character though. He's Sonic to Sonic as Sonic was to Robotnik.
The implementation of the extra features were cool, like Super Bunnhyop said, but I felt like it hurt the conventional pacing of the series.
