Sonic and Tails' adventure begin in Great Turquoise Zone. There they find Knuckles, who has once again tricked by Dr. Robotnik into thinking that Sonic and Tails have their own malign reasons for seeking the Chaos Emeralds. Knuckles collects the Chaos Emeralds and glides off, leaving Sonic and Tails dumbfounded and chase after him.

Sonic and Tails then encounter the Tart Turtle, who fights them to prevent them from continuing. The duo nonetheless defeats it. Following the Tart Turtle's defeat, Sonic and Tails run into Knuckles. The echidna laughs at them and immediately sets off a fiery tower trap, which blasts Sonic and Tails all the way into Sunset Park Zone.
