This problem happens when the belts in the tape deck become loose with age or if there is some mechanical problem. The easiest fix is to start the stereo with a key combination that disables the tape deck completely so that the stereo does not go into standby mode and you can use other playback methods like USB, DVD and audio in.
Press and hold Stop, Disc 3 and press the power button.. you will see 'TCM offline' and your stereo will work normally.
