Sony PS3 update and now controller won't work

5I can't go left or right because it locks in to either all up or all down, depending on if I turn it on wirelessly or sync with the USB. None of the buttons work except the PS button, or, when resynching, the Select. Mind you, this was after the Firmware update, but only after shutting down. I've tried pulling the plug, hitting the mini-button, etc. I don't want to spend another $50 on a controller to replace a perfectly working one.
