When it comes to creating social video content, the audio can be just as important as the
visuals. Your video can be top-drawer, but if the sound quality is poor viewers will switch off.
Sony knows this, and so for their new blogger-centric ZV-1 they’ve gone with a 3-capsule mic array.
Like the shotgun mics that are popular for vlogging, the ZV-1’s microphones are directional, prioritising the sound right in front of the lens. This helps cut out some distracting background noise - although you’ll need to be careful of other noises in the mic’s path.
As a nice, practical touch Sony has bundled the ZV-2 with a custom windshield. This slots right into the hot shoe and helps cut down on annoying wind sounds. The shield slightly obscures the on and off buttons when in use, but it sure beats having to stick on a DIY job.
There is also a software solution for wind reduction built in that you can toggle on - but it will have an effect on audio quality.
Since the ZV-1 features both a hot shoe and mic input you can also pair it with the external mic of your choice. The venerable Rode Videomic Pro does look a little out of place on such a compact device, but it does the job. The only downside is that there’s no headphone jack, so you can’t check your levels as you go.
