SPACE ACE is Cinematronics' second FMV laserdisc game for arcades and follows the groundbreaking DRAGON'S LAIR. It was originally released in 1983. Once again, animations were done by the Don Bluth Studios. The game was ported to Sega CD by Readysoft in 1994.
In this sci-fi saga, you are in control of Dexter who is on a mission to defeat the evil Borf who kidnapped Dexter's girlfriend Kimberly and threatens the world with a weapon called Infanto Ray which can turn adults into children.
Most scenes of this QTE title can either be played as weakling Dexter or his manly alter ego Ace. Whenever the word ENERGISE flashes on the screen, the player has the possibility to transform into Ace. Ace's routes usually require a lot more and faster inputs and are in general a lot tougher - but also much more rewarding in regards to action and storyline. Hence, Dexter's route can be seen as the easy mode of the game if you will.
This video shows Dexter's route - meaning all possibilities in the game to energize and transform into Ace were ignored. Note that it is necessary to turn into Ace in the final mission, otherwise you can't finish the game. I think I accidentally transformed into Ace a bit too early in the final battle... I could have kept on playing as Dexter for a few more inputs - but we really only talk about a few seconds here, so this doesn't influence gameplay or open an alternative scene.
I have also recorded a video of the Ace route: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KNGFS17IFY
The Sega CD port is missing some scenes of the original arcade version (everything with zooms or pans in it) which sometimes results in really weird transitions between missions. As far as I understand, there is also a whole stage missing in the Sega CD version. In general, this version is a decent port considering the limitations of the system. What I do find slightly annoying are the video loading times.
