Space Engineers - Torpedo Testing against the Hiira Class
Continuing my line of torpedo testing, I decided to see how my recent Hiira class fared against a series of torpedoes. Three tests were set up:
Test 1: Torpedo vs Superstructure.
The superstructure of the Hiira Class is the hanger bay, which extends out, either side of the vessel. Theoretically, this should be one of the weaker areas of the the ship, as the hanger bay is completely hollow inside.
Result: No significant damage to any ship systems (starboard hanger door was destroyed, however)
Test 2: Torpedos vs Fore & Aft
This test used two torpedos aimed at the ships bridge and engineering areas. Both areas contain vital systems and operating stations, but are well structured internally - unlike the hanger bay.
Result: The first torpedo struck the aft of the ship, obliterating the engineering and refinery compartments. The main reactor, gyroscopes, refineries and turrets were destroyed. The second torpedo struck the fore of the ship, destroying the bridge, cargo hold, batteries, turrets, and the emergency generators. In contrast to the previous test, the ship is rendered lifeless.
Test 3: Torpedos vs Aft, Superstructure and Fore
This is an all out test, firing 3 torpedos at the bridge, superstructure and the engineering compartment - combining the previous two tests.
Result: The first torpedo struck the engineering compartment, destroying the main reactor. However, the torpedo was not destroyed in the detonation, and the thruster became lodged in the ships engineering compartment, at full power. With no power to the ship, it began spinning as a result. The second torpedo struck the top of the hanger bay, damaging the hanger and hanger doors and destroying the ATC centre. As a result of the spinning, the last torpedo missed the target.
Conclusions: The Hiira class can be completely disabled by a sigle torpedo to the engineering compartment and can be rendered completely inert by a second torpedo to the bridge. Any attacks on the superstructure will not do enough damage to be worthwhile.
Also, the early design phase of the torpedo is proving limiting, as the torpedo will not necessarily be destroyed upon detonation, which could prove to be a problem in the targeting of additional torpedos, as seen in test 3.
