Spider Man And Venom Maximum Carnage (Snes) Review - Dubious Gaming
Transcript: (featuring horrible spelling!):
Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage for the super Nintendo and Sega Gensis came out in late 1994. This puts it roughly in the middle of the 16-bit life cycle. The game is biased around a comic book event that published in 1993 where spiderman and venom team up against a villain named carnage. This game is notable because it was the first video game to be biased directly off the plot of a comic book rather than just being baised off the chracters from a comic. It comics in a gimmicky red cartrage and is one of the only three SNES games not to be gray. Not counting noah's ark because wtf is that thing anyways?
This game was published by the dreaded game publisher LJN. Now I've been told this is one of the better tittles from LJN so lets find out.
Maximum carnage is a pretty standard beat em up game with a little spiderman flavor. Becides punching and jumping like you'd expect in any beat em' up you can also use your web to defend your self, grab enemies, and wrap enemies up.
You can also use your web to swing across the level, even though its not really useful for anything. You can also play as venom later in the game, which doesn't really have any differences compared to playing as spiderman, except that you get to be venom, which is pretty bad ass.
The levels them selfs are generally very short and actually have you back tracking and walking back and forth at times. They throw loads of 90's looking thugs at you and as spiderman its your job to beat there asses. At the end of the first level spiderman gets to beat up some chics and climb a building away from the crime scene.
there's plot cutscenes between most levels and its done in a fashion similar to a comic book. If your looking to play this game for its plot I wouldn't bother, its hard to grasp what's going on, ties in lots of marvel super heros I've never heard of. But if your looking to play this game to kick some ass as spiderman, play away!
Generally each level is followed up by a boss fight, you'll eather fight a hard enimey or a super villan. Some of the enimeys take way too many hits to kill, at the end of the third level I spent over 5 min just beating the ever living shit out of a dude fighting me with a peace of fried chicken and he would not die.
When you see an enmeny with a green bar of life you know your in for a bad time. You'll have no idea how much health they have and you just have to keep beating them repeatedly until their lifebar turns red. But when that sucker turns red its sooo satisfying.
I'm sure you've noticed by now but my health bar hasn't been going down. Its because at the title screen theres a cheat you can enter that makes you invenceable. Without it I'm completely sure that no one could beat this game unless they where a beat em' up god.
The level design isn't very impressive, usually your in a flat hall way just button mashing as you beat dudes up going down the hall. Graphically its pretty good looking, but the backgrounds of some of the levels can be pretty bland. The Web abilities really seemed cool at first but after playing a few levels I began to realize they where completely worthless and stuck to mashing the Y button.
Level 2 is interesting; it's the only level where you do some platforming climbing a building. It's a nice change from the mindlessness of the beat em up levels. it's the only level in the entire game that's unique. Its pretty cool too because you have to dodge lighting by using your spidey since. Level two probably only exists because some guy at LJN realized they didn't even utilize spiderman's ablity to stick to walls or his spidy sence at all.
I like that every dude your beating up has a name. Some of the names are actually kinda funny, after beating up bill and steve I beat up a guy named Sushi? And another guy named "lizard". I guess LJN was starting to run out of names by the time you hit the higher levels.
Hopefully you don't need verity in your bosses because you'll be fighting the same four again. Again. Again. And again.
And I'm just gonna say it, I fucking hate Shriek. She's this bitch who shoots lighting at you and god is she annoying. Shes a pain in the ass to kill and you have to fighter over and over again. And theres this other asshole 'carion' who floats above you grabbing your head and dodgeing all your attacks fuck that guy too.
Therse a fake ending at the end that sort of threw me off for a sec, if you wanna know more about it look it up I don't wanna give any spoilers.
Over all by the time I beat the game I was glad it was over. In the end this game is a pretty standard beat em up' and really isn't anything special at all. Although I don't think it lives up to LJN's legacy of god awful games, its still, not that great of a game. Maybe a 2 out of 5... ehhh... maybe. It took about 3 hours to beat but I was pretty much done with it after the first 40 min.
