OUR LAST DAY AS KIDS
The story of a punk teen and his relationship with his older brothers as he documents their band falling apart.
Our Last Day As Kids is a coming-of-age short film that takes place in the mid 2000's MySpace era. The film follows Casey, an awkward teen who documents his older brothers' band with his lofi camcorder in an attempt to be a part of the art they're making. As the film progresses, we watch the band and the connection Casey shares with his brothers fall apart, leaving him with a sense of loss and a lack of purpose. It is an unlikely friendship with a reckless punk girl that helps him cope and break out of his shell, as he helps her break out of hers.
The film takes inspiration from director Dylan Hryciuk's real life experiences documenting the local scene and his brothers' metalcore band, "Palms To The Sky" between 2006-2013 and is an ode to his youth, his brothers, and all the people that made the local scene what it was.
The MySpace era of 2005-2010 was extremely significant to so many teens across the globe. Punk, metal, hardcore and emo shows were prevalent anywhere that could house a small P.A. system, a couple of guitar amps, a drum kit and a small crowd.
This “scene” was a safe haven for outcasts, introverts and anyone who needed a place to call their own during their tumultuous youth. It was in these small venues that you could find loud music and even louder haircuts. The youth would define their personalities by their MySpace pages and commit themselves to artists that would travel the country in vans to make barely enough money to fill their gas tanks to get home.
This specific time has yet to be presented through film and it represents a very personal moment for many people, which can be seen with the current resurgence of punk and emo. It is because of all of this, that there is a need for us to tell this story and give voices to a diverse and eclectic group of outcasts; both in front and behind the camera. This short film will authentically represent the various personalities, landmarks and real life experiences in which this story is based upon.
WHO IS DYLAN HRYCIUK?
Dylan Hryciuk is an award-winning music video director and owner of the production company Versa Films based in Saskatchewan, Canada. Most notably, he has amassed over 12 million views for his work with bands like Spiritbox on their videos, “Constance,” “Hurt You” & “Blessed Be” and Senses Fail for their latest release “I’m Sorry I’m Leaving.”
If you watch Dylan’s music video work, you’ll notice they’re often incredibly detailed stories that pull at the heartstrings (watch: “Constance” and “I’m Sorry I’m Leaving”), and it’s this specific skill set that he hopes to bring to “Our Last Day As Kids.” The film is extremely personal and will pull inspiration from his teenage years, growing up as the kid brother documenting his brothers’ band and just trying to find his place in all of it.

LYRICS
Dying sun burns in the night
I watch it glow and it’s so hard for me
Speaking darkness out of spite
Coercion and then caving in
Wrap me in my bitterness
Give it up I’m complacent
Just enough to escape this
Heretics wouldn’t phase me
Lucid trust I don’t want it
Palms are rough when you promise
Fire lies when you’re honest
It’s hard to lose and wonder why
You pressure in increments
Like a slow moving coup
Memories dissident
When I am holding you
If my sun won’t set tonight
I’ll look around but it’s so hard for me
Like a shadow passing by
Crashing into shapes and then
Fading with my innocence
Give it up I’m complacent
Just enough to escape it
Heretics wouldn’t phase me
Lucid trust I don’t want it
Palms are rough when you promise
Fire lies when you’re honest
It’s hard to lose and wonder why
I have been waiting my whole life
For pressure in increments
Like a slow moving coup
Memories dissident
When I am holding you
