If asked why he continues to pursue cooperative adventure platformers, Hazelight Studios’ director Josef Fares would simply respond: “Because no one else does.” Strangely, only few studios have attempted to follow the success of It Takes Two—a game that once claimed the Game of the Year title. But at the same time, it’s understandable: anyone who tries will inevitably be compared to Hazelight.
So after spending a few hours playing Split Fiction—the studio’s latest project—alongside Tam, I can confidently say that Hazelight has yet to run out of ideas. If It Takes Two was the spark that reignited the co-op genre, Split Fiction* is the bold leap that elevates it to new heights. This game is bigger, more dynamic, and faster-paced than Cody and May’s fractured love story, delivering grand cinematic set pieces, precise platforming mechanics, and a slew of wildly inventive ideas that push the boundaries of split-screen co-op. It’s not just proof that Hazelight understands what made It Takes Two great—it’s a clear statement that they still have plenty of surprises in store for players.
