Based on the Nickelodeon animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants", it is a remake of the console version of the Heavy Iron Studios game "SpongeBob SquarePants: The Battle for Bikini Bottom" (2003). The main gameplay involves collecting items and defeating robots that attacked various areas in Bikini Bottom, crossing platforms and avoiding environmental hazards such as spikes and flames. In some areas, different characters are required to complete, as each character has its own unique abilities. The player can control SpongeBob , Patrick and Sandy . To switch characters, the player must find a bus stop, when using which the current character will switch to another, and reuse will switch back to the previous character, which gives the player the opportunity to choose two characters at each level. The default character in the game is SpongeBob; Sandy and Patrick do not share levels as playable characters.
Throughout the game, the player will collect shiny objects, socks and golden spatulas. Shiny items are dropped by enemies and scattered throughout the levels, and they can be used to pay for clams to advance through the levels and unlock additional challenges. They can also be exchanged at Mr. Krabs for gold spatulas. Socks are placed on levels in hard-to-reach places, and 10 of them can be exchanged at Patrick's for a Golden Shovel. Golden shovels are used to open new areas in the game, and 75 of them are needed to battle the final boss.
