The episode is a continuation of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I The game takes place in the world of Sonic. In the story, Dr. Eggman builds his base on a Small planet and teams up with Metal Sonic. To confront the two villains, Sonic calls for the help of his friend fox Tails. Together with his partner, the main character is going to disrupt the plans of the enemies. The gameplay of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II itself is similar to the old games released on Mega Drive/Genesis. There are three characters in the episode: in the main game — Sonic and Tails, and in the addition of Episode Metal — Metal Sonic.
Development of the second episode began in late 2010. The developers of the first episode took part in the creation of the game. After the release, the sequel received conflicting reviews from the gaming press.
