Spooktober '23 | Youkai Yashiki (MSX) - Playthrough
Would if be a Dream Harrier themed month without the MSX sneaking in somewhere? Youkai Yashiki is a pretty obscure Japanese only MSX game released by Casio in 1986. In it you play a boy armed only with a flashlight as he explores a youkai infested mansion.
The game is split into levels but you're able to travel between them, collecting items in one to take to the other. Each level has a boss that can only be fought by finding it's key (as well as they need to be fought in order). Stages have 5 talismans to collect which will get you the key. You also have to find some hidden items along the way to complete the adventure. The game can be a little inscrutable sometimes, especially without a translated manual but through the group effort of the chat we managed to win.
This game would be remade for the Famicom Disk System by Irem but the level layouts and bosses are completely different and gone are the required hidden items. At the end of the VOD we also do a playthrough of a fan patch that upgrades the graphics. It's neat and can be found at https://thenestruo.github.io/#link-2021-07-08
