Squid Game for Sega Genesis & Megadrive - Red Light Green Light
Like many other people, I absolutely loved the recent Korean show on Netflix, Squid Game. As I wanted a quick break from my larger projects anyway (Megadrive/Genesis versions of Castlevania SotN and GG Shinobi), I thought it would be fun to attempt to create a game based on the show.
Obviously, being created in such a short space of time by an amateur developer such as myself, the graphics, music and gameplay are all very basic. However, it was a good opportunity to try out a few things which may come in handy in my other projects. I learnt a lot about recording and compressing audio for the console, as well as testing out how many sprites can fit on the screen without creating any sprite flicker.
Regarding gameplay, the player character is the one at the very front, so it's easy to keep track of who you are. I was going to add a different colour to the sprite to make it look distinctive, but felt that it would have spoiled the overall aesthetic somewhat. If you move when the doll is watching then you die. I was also going to add some momentum to the movement, as that could potentially have added a little challenge to being able to stop in time, but it could also have made it frustrating. I'm waiting for some equipment to arrive, but will release the rom for anyone who wants to try once I'm confident it won't crash :)
I probably won't spend any more time on this, as I'm keen to get back to work on my other games. I'll be getting a real Megadrive console soon with an Everdrive, so I hope to be able to start sharing stuff once I have the ability to test on real hardware.
This footage was recorded using the Kega Fusion emulator (the colours and sound took a bit of a quality hit in the recording process, unfortunately)
