"The mystery of knowing where my life will be in this industry is truly the reason why I do it." - Andrew Scoggin

From high school orchestra pit to the bright lights of Hairspray's national tour, Andrew Scoggin tells all! Hear about his transformation from musician to Broadway star and why no dream is too big. Don't miss this backstage pass into a performer's life!
Welcome Andrew
We’re joined on the Starline by a man who at Palisades High School was playing in the pit for a high school Broadway show and thought “I could do that”. So “Once Upon A Mattress” turned him from the trumpet to where he is now as Corny Collins in the national touring show of “Hairspray”. We welcome Andrew Scoggin.

Andrew, let’s go Beyond the Mic. For anyone who hasn’t seen “Hairspray”, describe the show.

When you saw the movie and watch it on Broadway it is completely different than performing it. How has playing Corny in the show changed the way you experience the show?

In the beginning, did you measure your performance, comparing / contrasting between other Corny’s?

You sang choir in high school. What is your vocal type and how much range do you have?
The Rockin' 8:
It’s time for the Rockin’ 8, 8 random questions, answer with the first thing that comes to your mind. There is no Pressure.

1. What’s the one piece of wardrobe from each show you want to keep?

2. Best place to vacation?

3. How much money did you lose when you played the ponies last?

4. One thing you have to have on the road?

5. Once you found out the sword you used in “Three Musketeers” was used by Placido Domingo, what emotions went through your mind?

6. 1st place you have to find in a new city?

7. Last Alabama Football game you ever attended?

8. What grade did you get on your presentation on your Senior project on Nike’s impact on society?
The Back Half:
The North American tour of Annie was your last tour. How did that 44 venue tour prepare you for “Hairspray”?

I always ask Broadway stars where were they when they got the call for the job and who did they tell first, so… where and who?

How has Elizabeth been your rock while you’re both on the road especially while she’s in China in “The Sound of Music”?

You’ve got range playing in Mamma Mia, A Bronx Tale, King Richard II, Ragtime, Shakespeare in Love and Alice in Wonderland. How did each of these roles challenge you?

Which role is your dream roll and you can’t say the one you’re playing?

Where do you like hiking and how does the outdoors soothes you when all you know is theatres, busses and airplanes?
One Big Question:
What does the theatre mean to you and how has it changed your life?
The Wrap:
He researched real life TV hosts preparing for his role, worked at TGI Fridays, loves breakfast sandwiches. Andrew Scoggin wants you to see him in the national tour of “Hairspray” Andrew thanks for taking the time to talk with us today!

And that my friends is Beyond the Mic.
