State of Sound Sessions: Kate Rhudy and Crowmeat Bob
1State of Sound Sessions is a new series produced by NC State University Libraries and the State of Sound project that features recorded live performances of a diverse array of artists, captured by the Make Media team. Captured live in distanced settings and broadcast on the NC State University Libraries Twitch channel, State of Sound Sessions gives you the chance to see artists up close and engage with them in the live chat that happens during the broadcasts. State of Sound Sessions are virtual, free, and open to the public.
This week we bring you performances from two Raleigh, NC performers: Kate Rhudy and Crowmeat Bob.
Raleigh-based songwriter Kate Rhudy worked alongside collaborator and producer Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange to create her 2017 debut, Rock N’ Roll Ain’t For Me, which earned Rhudy nods from WUNC and INDY Week as “one of the Triangle’s sharpest young songwriters”. Rhudy’s plainspoken lyrics garnered recognition from She Shreds, “Kate Rhudy is changing the name of country by doing things her own way” and The Strangers Almanac, “for those tired of Americana music from the male perspective, give Kate Rhudy's debut a shot”. On October 9, 2020, Rhudy released a 7-inch record “Dance It Away, Snake”, including the single “Dance It Away” featured on Spotify’s Infinite Indie Folk playlist.
From Indy Week: "Bob Pence has gone by Crowmeat Bob for as long as anyone around these parts can remember. When the INDY conferred an Indies Arts Award upon him [in 2005], praising him for his iconoclasm, inclusivity, and devotion to his art, he was already a scene veteran. Although Pence's joking prediction of MTV stardom hasn't panned out, his roots in the area's music scene have only deepened over the years. He's loaned his skills on saxophone and other horns to numerous local bands, mostly those of an improvisational bent, like Enemy Waves, Savage Knights, and Polyorchard, and countless side projects…"
