Steelrising is "Bloodborne on PC," but for casuals. Aesthetically pleasing and wicked soul-lite with an understandable storyline
In Steelrising we play as an automaton girl who helps the French revolutionaries defeat the mechanical army of the bloodthirsty king.
At first, we participate in the Great Revolution in a casual manner; our main concern is not the regime change, but rather the Queen Mistress's orders: to stop her husband's outrages, find out the fate of her son, and get to the inventor of robots - let him fix what he has done. But over time, the heroine becomes more and more deeply involved in the political redistribution of France and makes decisions that will affect the fate of the nation.
Gameplay-wise, Steelrising is a casual soul-lite game. It has all the traditional traits of the genre, except complexity and sneakiness. Occasionally it tries to plant a challenge or set a trap, but always in a kindly, cautious way: there are no instant kill traps in the game. This is unheard of in Dark Souls or Sekiro.
I'll explain in a nutshell why this is sometimes good, but most of the time not so good.
Why Steelrising is not a bad game
I confess in advance that I liked Soulslick. All of its pros and cons became apparent after ten hours, and then the surprises ended: in the second half, Steelrising didn't throw up any new mechanics or new situations.
But I made it to the end of the game, because I got sucked in. Not as the author responsible for the text, but as a gamer: I happily returned to Steelrising day after day. Started playing it for work, and finished it for myself.
Why?
The magic of GreedFall worked again - the intertwining of the setting with its fantasy incarnation pays off the boring gameplay. Spiders was already making a poor, but charming, role-playing game. In GreedFall, lush noble dialogue, Conquistadorian fantasy, and a fetish for stylish outfits interrupted the primitive combat system and featureless locations. Now the studio has got the same kind of Souls-lite: in an alternatively historical Paris in the middle of the Great French Revolution, only instead of royal soldiers the riot is trying to quell an army of bizarre automatons. The interlocutors are all historical figures: the ardent Maximilien de Robespierre, his antipode - the pragmatic Marquis de La Fayette (his last name was then still spelled separately) and other prominent idealists and politicians of the era. That is why the dialogues are again high-pitched, and now and then they switch from Russian (in subtitles) to French in Tolstoy's manner. And our heroine, just like the characters in GreedFall, is dressed with the latest clothes.
Separately, we should highlight the design of automatons. Both the privates, found here and there in the locations, and the bosses - the so-called Colossi. Each of them is not just beautifully designed, but tries to embody the metaphor by their appearance and combat abilities. For example, Colossus the Bishop swings a chain hook bible to literally drag you into religion. Colossus the Frog, on the other hand, is so cold-blooded that he has a block of ice instead of a body. Unfortunately, the metaphors don't help the automatons pose any threat, but their slowness and stupidity give us a chance to better discern the mechanisms and decipher the imagery.
Pros of the game +.
Great atmosphere;
The sights of Paris;
Controlling the character is enjoyable;
No souls-like "stuffiness";
Great music;
Dynamic gameplay and a variety of abilities.
The minuses of the game are.
Outdated graphics;
Boring levels in places;
Boring opponents and boring design;
Optimization problems.
