STRAY game review - Should you play this new cat video game?
Stray game review
I have heard from various friends I wish I could just be a cat, not have to work or pay taxes. My work would be just being adorable. Well my friends this is your chance. In the game stray you get to play as a cat.
Nerd Morning everyone my name is Jeremy and this is the Nerd Morning Gaming Channel and this is my review of the game Stray, and help you decide if this is a game you should be playing.
This game is available for Playstation 4 and 5 users as well as on PC. And my experience with it was on the PlayStation 5.
Stray is a chilling and charming game. It is charming because you really do play as an adorable cat but chilling because you play in a dystopian future where in the city you explore there are only a few robots left, and not all of those are very friendly. These robots give you tasks to accomplish that gives you a different feel and experience than with the more platformer elements of the game. This did a really good job of keeping this game interesting.
I think this game is genius. The concept of looking at a dystopia through the lens of an animal is really unique. And it should be noted apart of the harness style backpack you are a normal cat, all be it a very clever cat.
And as you traverse this landscape you are presented with lots of puzzles as you explore and travel. And since you are a cat you can’t solve things like you would if you were a human. You need to knock things over, carry things in your mouth, and also use the help of the robot friend you make on the way in order to solve the puzzles.
Though this game motivates you to go through the maze of the city this game definitely recognizes that you are a cat, and that makes it fun with how you interact with objects in the game. And there is a button dedicated for meowing which is extremely fun.
This is not a high action game, so when you are burned out from work or from being killed in Elden Ring. This cozy style game is absolutely perfect. (Though there is a little bit of action in this game too).
With everything you will get a button prompt to interact with it including while you are jumping to different surfaces. This makes the game not one focused on your button control skills but rather to be focused on the smooth natural movements of the cat.
One of the things that I thought about with this story is that is one best told in a video game medium. The story is too big to fit as an animated short, wit the silent protagonist it couldn’t really work as a movie either. As a book you couldn’t describe and capture the unique feel of the city, And since most of this game is focused on these traversal puzzles no other medium could do that quite as well. It was just really cool to see a video game tell a story that I felt was perfect for the unique strengths of the art medium of video games.
Steam gave this game a 10/10 and Metacritic gave it a 83% both are really favorable ratings.
I, for myself, really enjoyed the game. I thought it was a breath of fresh air from what I usually play. Though this isn’t the type of game I spend most of my time playing I think did what it was doing masterfully and makes this a game not to miss out on.
