Stream: PC Genjin/Bonk's Adventure (PCE & NES)
In this stream I kick off what's going to be a series for the next while where I'll play all the PC Genjin/Bonk/BC Kid games that I haven't already covered. We start with the Japanese version of the original game on PC-Engine. It's cute and a lot of the conventions that I grew up with in the SNES instalment are here fully formed. Sadly, towards the end the difficulty gets uncomfortably high with enemy spam and stingy health refills, culminating in a hellish final boss fight that takes me ages with much savestate abuse.
After I was done with that, I jumped in to the North American version of the later Famicom port. Porting a 16-bit tentpole to an 8-bit system gives it bootleg energy, but not in a bad way. In fact because of sprite limitations, there's less of a constant assault of enemies, plus they're more generous with health. The final boss has also been tweaked so I ended up breezing through it and enjoying myself a lot more, even though a lot has been cut out and cut down for this version.
