I try out another 3 shoot-em-ups from the PC Engine library, which is packed full of them. These are all horizontally-scrolling ones with some kind of concept to them.

Psychosis, 1990, PC Engine. Also known as Paranoia in Japan, this makes heavy use of surreal or mythological imagery. As Dual/Klon's first shmup you can see some mechanics that appear in their later L-DIS, as well as others lifted from R-Type. It's a fine game; its strongest suit is the aesthetics. I got through one loop but declined the game's challenge to do it again but harder

Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise, 1993, PC Engine CD. AKA CD Denjin, the follow-up to Naxat Soft's prior game that reframed PC Genjin/BC Kid/Bonk as a punk cyborg. It's cute, cartoony, very cheesy, and a lot of fun. I got to the ending on normal mode.

Deep Blue, 1989, PC Engine. This takes the aquatic theme many shmups make use of, and takes it to the extreme. The enemies are endless swarms of fish and other sea life, with a giant ocean creature as boss of each of the four stages. It's also unreasonably difficult, so I made unrestrained use of rewinds to get to the end of the game's initial loop. Again, I declined a second loop.

Meanwhile we chatted about X-Men, Disneyland rides, and MST3K among other things.
