M.U.G.E.N. (also known as MUGEN, or Mugen) is a game engine for fighting games developed by Elecbyte and started in 1999 using the Allegro library.[1] Elecbyte distributed a beta version that ran on DOS, Linux, and Windows. This engine allows anyone to create characters (known as chars), scenarios and add-ons (screenpacks) through interpreted text files and compilations of graphics and sounds, and even supports MP3 in the scenarios during the game and add-ons. The engine is powerful and flexible, while allowing the use of features found in any 2D game, such as the Street Fighter series produced by Capcom or King of Fighters series produced by SNK.
