Strider | SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis | MiSTer Playthrough
I thought about replaying this game again and trying to get through without continuing but this game is so bad and so overrated, I can't stomach it. This playthrough highlights a bunch of the issues with the game but there's still a bunch of issues that didn't happen in this playthrough. There's a section where I physically slide off the platform without moving and died. I couldn't move and stop myself. Complete nosense. Some deaths are my fault, some aren't. The nostalgia is strong with this and I used to think it was good but playing it now, nah, this is so bad. Wonky hit detection, bizarre physics, slowdown, pauses to load, inconsistent patterns, terrible level design, terrible boss design. Hiryu is cool and that's about it (he becomes even cooler in later Capcom appearances). There's a boss that shows up twice in the game. It looks cool but you have to take damage. What kind of design is that? There's a pirate. No more needs to be said about that.
When people say this is one of the Mega Drive's best games, they haven't played it in 30 years. Take no notice, this game is garbage. I really want to like this game because of the nostalgia but I have to concede, it's terrible. If anyone tells you how great it is, they're lying and can't bring themselves to admit this game stinks because they're either too stubborn to admit they're wrong or it might hurt their retro gamer street cred. I recommend a playthrough so you can see how bad it is yourself. What a shame. Hey, maybe it's the MiSTer's Mega Drive core going berserk. I don't believe that though.
I'll try the arcade version at a later date.
