Sugi Dakks | Not the Only One | Talks at Google
Sugi Dakks performs a selection of his songs and discusses his journey, music career and experience as a mixed-race artist.
For Sugi Dakks, existing outside the norm is the norm. The left of center genre-bending Hip-Hop artist aims to embody all his quirks, idiosyncrasies, and mannerisms with a boldness and strength. A mixed race (Japanese/African American) multi-instrumentalist, rapper, singer, slam poet, producer, activist from a smalltown, Sugi Dakks is no stranger to being an outsider. The success of his latest music video Not The Only One, where he explores the complexities of his own racial identity, encapsulates an artist that is both masterful at his craft and takes pride in his “otherness.”
Sugi has also made waves behind the scenes, producing releases with Grammy nominated Warner acts such as Wale and Chika and for TV series including Power, MTV’s Cribs, Love Hip-Hop, Atlanta, and The Kelly Clarkson Show. His debut EP Not All That Glitters is Gold is an extension and an enhancement of this message to find power in uniqueness. The EP's raw emotional force and musicianship is just the tip of the iceberg for one of Hip-Hop’s best kept secrets and what people are calling the “Outkast for a new millennium.”
