I think the game is very frustrating, and as soon as you're in a bad position, you're just fucked. Memorize the entire stage, make no mistake, and it's not such a hard game exactly.
It's a contra clone, and it gets that aspect of contra down very well. All in all, very solid recommend. Cheap and very solid so far. I can't speak to length, but I think if it's even 5 stages like this, it's a reasonable time to sink.
