The ACTUAL original Super Freaks game! This is Escape the Spider Maze all the way back from January 2005, which...yeah, it basically is an edit of the old Game Maker maze tutorial, but it's at least different enough.
Fun fact, back in the day, a family friend of ours (RIP) who from what I recall was vice president of IDG actually sent this over to GamePro which IDG published; Dr. Zombie (whoever it actually was since they all used funny codenames) actually played it and reviewed it and was super sweet and supportive about it! If you're looking for what cemented my gamedev career, that was it. They even sent me Beyond Good and Evil but I didn't have a PS2, so I gave it to my best buddy Kingnormal.
As for this new polished version, there's actually been a ton of changes under the hood, mostly to the game resolution, spider behavior, little level design fixes, blatant retcons (this is now chronologically the first Super Freaks game, and both Geyzer and Apex's God Particle were retconned in), and there's also two modes now! There is a normal mode with a level select and endless retries, and an arcade mode for the original level to level experience with lives. I am very sentimentally attached to this game though so I'm very ok with putting way too much effort into this remaster.
Fun fact, the original 2006 version of Super Freaks 1 teased a sequel to this game; one was in the works but it was lost. It would've revealed the spiders were actually aliens, and there would've been an attempt at more elaborate boss fights and a shop feature in between levels which tbh was not very well thought out. Maybe I can get an actual sequel made for when the game turns 20 next year. That's how you know I'm getting old!
