Super Mario 3D World Any% Speedrun In 1:35:38 (WR)
I will go for sub 1:35:00.
Leaderboard: https://www.speedrun.com/sm3dw
Watch attempts preformed live: https://twitch.tv/luigimaster06
This run improves my previous uploaded record of 1:35:50 by 12 seconds mostly due to more optimization and better gameplay. I will be improving this more and more.
Q: What are the techniques being used to gain and maintain your speed?
A: The techniques are cat momentum, cat scratching, crouch boosts, edge crouches, and vectoring. Cat momentum involves preserving your speed gained from a dive, you do this by diving, and before you hit the ground, scratch, and then jump. This resets your speed everytime you do it so you only need to do it when needed. Cat scratching can be used to gain extra momentum before doing cat momentum, as this gives a boost and can save some time. Crouch boosting involves crouching briefly before jumping again, this multiplies your speed by a bit and repeated use can net you extremely fast speeds. Doing a crouch boost on a edge, called a edge crouch, multiplies your speed even more than a normal crouch boost, so that is done is certain places. Vectoring involves curving at a slight angle in the air to gain small amounts of speed.
Q: How does save skip work?
A: This involves filling a USB Drive to its limit (less than 39mb) and placing your SM3DW data there, there is no room to save the game, but enough to keep a local save that is deleted when the game is closed or the console is turned off. This skips the "Saving..." textbox and saves 2 seconds each time it appears, saving 2 minutes and 17 seconds.
Q: Why are you collecting the stars?
A: The game requires 170 to enter the final level. Other requirements include 130 stars for 7-Castle and 80 for 5-3.
Q: Why are you switching and then choosing your player each level
A: This trick saves around 3 seconds each level because if you don't do it the game waits that period
Q: What are the advantages of using certain characters for certain levels?
A: Peach has a floating ability which is good, because of that she is used in most levels. Luigi can jump higher than any other character, so he is also present for a good chunk of the run. Toad is used for levels that don't require large amounts of extensive platforming, his jump is the smallest but he runs the fastest. Mario is a balanced character and therefore is useless in this run. Rosalina has better crouch boosts and holds momentum better, but she doesn't appear until after the game is beaten.
Q: How did you jump from World 8 to World 4 and enter the Mystery House?
A: This trick involves jumping into the top of the pipe at a certain location, you can then explore the pipe and even jump off, we then jump into where the Mystery House is. It is accessible right away, however the old route played 4-A and 4-4 and then went back to 4-2 to warp to World 5. This trick saves 1:20-1:40 depending on how many tries it takes, I got it fifth try.
Q: How did you skip the Meowser cutscene?
A: Place a tanooki near the slope. You can dive onto the slope using a cat suit and then slide down quickly, then dive in the opposite direction to maintain the speed and jump into a tanooki leaf and preform a crouch boost near the edge to keep the speed, and then fly into the boss fight, skipping the cutscene, this however disables the music for the rest of the level in some cases. Remember, you don't have to do the crouch boost to preform it, it just helps out.
Q: How did you get past the autoscrollers
A: It involves playing through the section without seeing and then hitting certain triggers which advance the autoscroller. For 6-7, it isn't extremely difficult but you can sometime die doing it. In 8-Castle, its easier because you just climb up the clouds on the left side, using audio cues to know when you landed on a cloud.
Q: Why do you avoid a 1, 3, or 6 on the timer
A: These times give you fireworks, which wastes a couple of second so it's better to avoid them.
Q: How could this time be improved
A: This can be improved by another minute with better optimization on some levels. There was also a fair amount of mistakes in this run aswell as minor mistakes, such as climbing up the flagpole or getting fireworks. The bad levels are 5-2, 5-6, 5-X, 6-2, 6-5, 7-1, 7 8-1, 8-3, and 8-4.
