Super Mario 3D World - Rosalina (Itemless) | Momentum & Ice Physics #1 (25th April 2020)
Explaining how momentum functions in Super Mario 3D World, based on my observations, and primarily how the renowned ice momentum [crouch] exploit can help Rosalina in World 6-5.
After the introduction, the video explains how momentum generally works in the game, and I separate this into four rules to help conceptualise everything. These aren't official rules that the game abides by, but rules I can identify from experience as I play the game.
After this, the video explains how momentum works when ice physics are active, separating this into four additional rules that only apply when on the ice. *These are subject to accuracy.
To summarise, the ice momentum exploit only occurs because the ice physics cancel out the part of the crouch animation that resets momentum to 0. As a result, having the momentum continuously active allows it to be built up exponentially. This could be used to collect the 2nd Green Star in World 6-5.
Notes:
There is a second video that uses information from this video, provides additional information, and clarifies misconceptions from this one. It has a focus on long-jumping, and can be seen here: (https://youtu.be/fKB2bmC4fxU)
The clip after 0:47 is quieter than the others.
*Whilst I claim "ice momentum" to be separate or additional to regular momentum, this may be an incorrect interpretation. Instead of the 2nd rule I created for ice physics, the 3rd rule could be responsible for the momentum. The momentum from previous velocity is maintained by the ice physics; crouching allows the momentum to take effect; the ice physics cancels the second crouching animation, so the previous momentum isn’t reset; Rosalina can start moving again and create more momentum; the ice physics makes this cycle repeat, so long as none of these conditions are broken.
