For its time, Super Mario 64 was a technological marvel. So much, that people were very willing to overlook the poor overall quality of the game. The astoundingly trash camera and the piss poor controls were easily forgiven for one of the first 3D adventures ever. Nintendo was right to make this game open in nature, since many Stars are incredibly tedious to obtain. Another studio working on titles for the Nintendo 64 chose to embrace this aspect of openness, rather than let it be fueled by fear as was visible in Super Mario 64.
