Super Mario Bros. Wonder is my favorite game of 2023. I haven't played any other games from this year, but I'm confident that Mario Wonder beats all the others out. From start to finish, very few games have been able to give me the same sense of pure, unfettered joy and excitement that Mario Wonder has. The last one I remember was actually Bowser's Fury, another amazing Mario Switch game. From the quick and snappy gameplay and simple-to-learn, tough-to-master controls to the vibrant landscapes that are a joy to explore, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a wonderful journey, beginning to end.

Mario Wonder's levels are vibrant and colorful. As a Pokemon player, I'm not really much of a graphics guy, and obviously the textures aren't as realistic as Elden Ring's, but they're not meant to be. The game has style. Developers said during interviews that they focused much of their time on making the characters more expressive in this entry, and it shows. Each of the playable characters has voice lines and animations that are all totally new to this game, and the badges and forms that they can acquire each have a bit of flair to them as well. And the worlds and levels you explore are so colorful, it's like viewing a rainbow every time you hit start.

The music is rather simple, but charming. It's fun to listen to the various tracks, and they're all happy in one way or another. The graphics themselves are rather cute too. Again, neither facet is all that realistic, but that otherworldliness keeps the game fresh and exciting. Pastels and ukeleles and bright colors and fun fill the eyes and ears of players just as much as they fill the world of the game.

The game is rather difficult, too, at least by Mario standards. I played on the game's easy mode with Yoshi, mostly because I think Yoshi is cute but partly so that I could finish the game quickly, and I still got a game-over. I imagine the game would've been even more challenging if I were playing as a regular character, which is a good thing. I was largely able to romp through the game unharmed, but there are a lot of enemies and platforming challenges which will make the game no walk in the park for most.

The game is not perfect, though. My two biggest gripes are that the levels are too short and that the boss fights are rather repetitive. I'm glad that the levels each feel so wonderfully-crafted and are full of character, but there were many times where I'd finish a level in just one or two minutes, hungry for more. And, despite the character and vibrance of the rest of the game, almost every boss fight is against Bowser Jr, or technically on an airship's conveyor belt with generic enemies. The Bowser Jr. fights are rather engaging for what they are, but I feel like the game deserved to see more characters in wacky situations, not just Bowser Jr. in multiple weird arenas. Heck, the first Bowser Jr. fight was my favorite, and things only went downhill from there.

Overall, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a delightful game, and I wouldn't be surprised if we get more games like it. I hope the boss fights are handled better in future entries, but for now, this will do. I definitely recommend picking it up if you can, even if you think you're burned out on Super Mario.
